Dear guests,

the world’s biggest theatre stage is once again adazzle with a brilliant and magnificent new Grand Show: ARISE – Love is stronger than time

The word ‘arise’ means to stand up, not to give up, to keep faith in the eternal power of love and to trust that light will prevail over all darkness. What could be more fitting in these times than a glimmer of hope and a new openness to the future?

Putting together a new Grand Show in the midst of a pandemic has really tested our optimism – often in the very truest sense of the word during the rehearsals that began back in February. Our international creatives and artists faced travel restrictions and we also had difficulties obtaining stage parts and costume fabrics from all four corners of the globe. The fact that we managed this – tous ensemble – is, in retrospect, nothing short of a miracle. It isn’t without reason that ARISE was the first new production of this size to premiere at a theatre since March 2020.

Join us for the return of glorious extravagance and dazzling radiance to the Palast. Over 100 radiant artists from 26 nations will ensure the goosebump moments we’ve all been missing with their top performances.

LET US ARISE TOGETHER!

General Director & Show Producer

“In moments of darkness, time teaches us what is important and what will be remembered. We write history in the here and now; love is what remains for all eternity.”

It is with this revelation that the world-famous photographer Cameron concludes his emotional journey from darkness back into the light. He succeeds in finding an answer for himself to the question of all questions, namely how we use our time.

William Baker and I came upon the idea for the ARISE Grand Show in early 2019 while on a longer stroll through the historic centre of Berlin during which we asked ourselves this very question. We talked about what drives us, our paths through life, and what we’ll leave behind in people’s hearts and minds one day. We talked about memories and images, about special moments and people we’ll never forget. This led us to the art form of photography, which serves as a symbol of life in the show. What moments do we capture forever? Who can be seen in the images? And what matters in the end?

The story begins with an everyday situation for Cameron: a fashion shoot. The narrator and ambivalent adversary Time has prepared everything. Cameron attempts to proceed like usual, but he fails to capture the perfect moment. Self-doubt and dark thoughts engulf him, represented by devious demons who draw him into the darkness. Suddenly, the sun rises majestically in the background and Cameron encounters Light. She wants to know what changed him. He opens his heart to her and tells of the loss of his Muse, which has in turn led him to lose his inspiration and his brilliant colours.

Light resolves to help him and leads him to his photo lab to show him who he really is. Together, they look through photographs, through the memories from his life shaped by extravagant personalities and intoxicating emotions. Time invites the audience to relive these moments and to embark with him on a journey into the past in which Cameron’s art is reinterpreted through music, choreography and acrobatics.

Zum Anfang
But the memories of past moments cannot free Cameron from his pain. He remains in turmoil, tormented by the question of the meaning of life. Light reappears and explains that he must face his fears. Cameron has nothing to lose and so confronts Time, blaming him for having taken everything from him. Time sees the past through different eyes though. He reminds Cameron that he isn’t the enemy, but rather the greatest gift of all. To convince Cameron of his power, Time proposes a deal: he’ll allow Cameron one final encounter with his Muse, from now until sunrise, on the condition that Cameron promises to cherish Time for the rest of his life.

The pair come to an agreement. Reunited with his Muse, Cameron rediscovers his inspiration and his vibrant colours shine in the most beautiful of images. Yet sunrise is approaching. His Muse tells him that as long as he remembers her and their moments together, she’ll always be with him in his heart. Cameron finds solace and hope in this revelation. He continues on his way and keeps his promise: he cherishes Time as a good friend forever more.

The creative team has been working intensively for more than two years now to convey this rollercoaster of emotions, and designed Cameron’s world with boundless imagination and dedication. This world would be nothing, though, if it were not brought to life by the fantastic stage artists and colleagues in front of, on, behind, next to, above and below the stage up to eight times a week. It is their versatile talents and their love, energy and passion that make this adventure possible. My heartfelt thanks go to the entire team. I hope that this Grand Show inspires you and that you enjoy the story.

So how do you use your time?
